Artist Bio
Lasha Stewart (b. 1999, Atlanta, GA) works in Philadelphia as a Black American artist. Lasha graduated from Drake University with a BA in Studio Art, concentrating in Drawing. Lasha received her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA).
Her work centers around themes of identity, societal struggles, and emotions. Lasha enjoys using found objects and materials ranging from tires to slinkies to secondhand fabrics. The use of these materials is just as important as the narratives that she instills into her pieces. Her work is currently centered around surrealist figurative painting on second-hand fabrics.
Lasha participated in the Summer Undergraduate Residency at the New York Academy of Art and the Casa Na Ilha Artist Residency in Ilhabela, São Paolo, Brazil. She was also awarded the Fine Arts Venture Fund grant from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Gross McCleaf Gallery Painting Prize.
